Indonesia Flooding Update: Village Assisted by Team

Thursday, 25 March 2010 07:00
The flood impacted 15,510 houses, two thirds of which are under 3 meters of water (reported by Kompas Daily). Our disaster relief team delivered 200 packs of clothes for the Teluk Buyung village, Pakis Jaya sub-district, Karawang District, West Jaya. Smiles were on their faces because for days the village was isolated by water without hope for assistance. The area is 1.5 hours from the district center on broken down roads. While some assistance has arrived to the District capital, these areas are still low on the priorities.

The team discovered 672 houses flooded in the Teluk Buyung village where 2,442 people set up small huts or anything they could find on the roadside, the only high ground. The people in the area are mostly poor rice farmers or hired famers who struggle to survive already in their daily lives. 121 hectares of rice fileds are flooded and the rice is damaged. The only primary school in the village is also flooded, creating chaos among the children. Mothers reported that their kids can not sleep well while some are continously having nightmares/bad dreams, signs of trauma.

HOPE worldwide identifies some needs on the ground that may need assistance:

  1. Ready-to-eat meals and bottled water
  2. Tarpaulins or Tents as emergency shelters
  3. Clean waterand sanitation
  4. Medicines as many may get sick from poor living conditions and sanitation.
  5. Psychosocial support for children with trauma

The communities will take some time to recover as the water will not recede anytime soon in this low-level ricefield.

We are appealing for individuals and organization to take part in this disaster relief effort. HOPE worldwide would like to support 1,000 families in recovering from this flood in the next few weeks, which is estimated to cost about $100,000.
